Have a question that you don’t see here? You’re probably not alone. Email us with your question and we'll post our answers online.
WHO’S BEHIND THE REAL FOOD MEDIA CONTEST?
We are! Who is we? Real Food Media, a collaboration among some of the nation's leading food and farming organizations joining together to help spread the story of our food. How, you ask? Through creative movies, this contest, a web-based action center, and grassroots events. Check out our full range of programs at Real Food Media including the Food MythBusters -- and learn more about the Real Food Films team here.
CAN I WORK WITH A TEAM?
Yes, of course! You just need to designate one person on the Entry Form as the main contact and, for winning films, this person will be the recipient of any and all award money. Please review our Terms and Conditions to learn more. By submitting the entry form on behalf of your team, you are verifying that all team members agree to the Terms and Conditions for their part of the work. Drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
CAN AN ORGANIZATION SUBMIT A FILM?
Organizations are welcome to create a film for the contest, but must designate an individual as the entrant for the contact information for the contest.
CAN I SUBMIT MORE THAN ONE MOVIE?
Sure, go nuts! You can submit as many movies as you want. Keep in mind you will need to fill out one form for each submission.
CAN I SUBMIT A MOVIE THAT’S ALSO AN ASSIGNMENT FOR MY SCHOOL?
Absolutely. We welcome students to work on assignments that relate to the Contest. Please check with your school before submitting because your school may have some rights over the use of the submission. You are responsible for checking your school’s policies regarding the ownership of your film.
CAN I SUBMIT A FILM I'VE ALREADY MADE?
If the final cut you submit doesn't already live on the internet or hasn't been screened at another venue, absolutely. If it has, you can still submit it, but it must be edited for the contest. So change it up, put a new spin on footage you've already shot, add to something you've been working on--and enter! As with all entries, you also need to make sure there weren't, or aren't, any issues or claims with the copyright and usage and, like all entries, you must follow our Terms and Conditions.
CAN I SUBMIT AN ENTRY IF I'M BASED INTERNATIONALLY?
Yes, this is the first year we're opening the Contest up to entrants based outside the U.S. and Canada! But: you need to agree to consent to jurisdiction in the United States if there is a problem with copyright or other claims. Also, as we note in our Terms and Conditions, you are responsible for paying taxes on any award money you receive, and would similarly be responsible for paying taxes per your country laws on any award money.
CAN THE FILM BE SHOT OVERSEAS?
Definitely! The powerful stories we want to hear have no boundaries.
WHO HAS THE RIGHTS TO THE MOVIE ONCE I SUBMIT IT?
We retain all rights to the movies until we announce the winners and ask that you do not publicly share the movies until winners are announced. If yours is among the finalists, we will release the rights under a creative commons license. If you are not among the finalists, you're free to do what you want with your film after the announcement is made. After the winners are announced, your film may be chosen to be included in the Film Library, at which time we will contact you.
WHICH CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSE WILL THE FILMS BE UNDER?
After the close of the contest, the films will be released under a Creative Commons (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International) license.
ARE THERE ANY ENTRY FEES?
As a non-profit organization, we're asking filmmakers to consider a $35 donation to the project when you submit this year to help cover our costs, but if this is a barrier to entry for anyone we're happy to waive this fee.
WHERE ARE THE ENTRY GUIDELINES AND AGREEMENT?
HOW DO I SUBMIT MY MOVIE?
HOW DO I KNOW YOU RECEIVED MY MOVIE?
Once you successfully submit your film, you will receive an automated response to the contact listed on the Entry Form. If you do not receive that automated response (first check your spam folder), feel free to check in to make sure we received your entry. We review all entries soon after they are submitted to verify that they meet eligibility requirements. Due to the volume of submissions, we will only contact you if we have a question about your entry.
HOW WILL I KNOW IF I’M A WINNER?
We will be announcing the finalists on April 1, 2016. If you are among the lucky ones, we'll be getting in touch with you before we make the public announcement.
HOW CAN FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES VOTE FOR MY MOVIE?
As soon as online voting launches on April 1, 2016, you'll get an email that you can share with friends and family to encourage them to vote on our site for your movie. We’ll also be posting other ways to engage your networks to vote for your movie online.
WHAT VIDEO FORMAT DO I NEED TO USE FOR MY MOVIE?
Please check out our Entry Guidelines for tips on uploading to Vimeo. Keep in mind that if and when you are announced as the winning movie, in order to screen your movie at festivals, you'll need to send us an Apple Pro Res file and ideally an aspect ratio of 16:9.
DO I NEED TO USE RELEASE FORMS IF I'M FILMING PEOPLE IN MY MOVIE?
Yes, you will. If you don’t have all the necessary releases or permissions from folks who you include in the project (interviewees, music, etc.) and someone informs us that they believe you don’t have permission, they may ask us to take the film down from our site, which means it cannot be included in voting.
WHERE WILL MY MOVIE BE SHOWN?
We are still finalizing all the great distribution opportunities and festivals where your film will be shown if it is a finalist or winner. The winning film will be featured at the Food and Farm Film Fest in San Francisco. Stay tuned to our blog for new opportunities as they are posted and be sure to register to our Real Food Films community for all the latest news.
